Exploring Convergence - Oxford version

In addition to the programs you'll build you'll need these tools.

We are exploring sequences that get smaller but do not go below zero.

Such as:

  • 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 ...
  • 1/2, 1/4, 1/8/ 1/16...

The questions we are looking at are:

  • What is the shape of these sequences, and what does it tell us about them?

  • What happens when you sum up the terms of these sequences?

For each sequence, our tasks are:

  1. Model the sequence in ToonTalk.
  2. Predict the shape of its graph.
  3. Use the ToonTalk Grapher Tool to plot the graph.
  4. Show the others what you have done.
  5. Program an Add Up robot to generate the running totals of the sequence.
  6. Predict the shape of the graph of your series (i.e. running totals for your sequence).
  7. Use the ToonTalk Grapher Tool  to plot the graph.
  8. Explore the reciprocals and their sum (called the Harmonic Series). Best to program them yourselves but you'll find these tools in the activity notebook if you need them.
  9. Predict the shape of the graph of the Harmonic Series.
  10. Use the ToonTalk Grapher Tool  to plot the graph.
  11. Explore the differences between your sequence and the reciprocals using the Sum of Differences tools in the activity notebook.
  12. Finish your individual web report.
  13. Publish a group report with findings of the group.
