[Encyclopaedia] Not randomly - not by chance

Meanings:

  1. Fact or event that happens because of someone's will or for some reason (after a reflection).
  2. A thing, or a situation which we know how it is going to end up.

 

Examples:

  • If you have to chose between 20 jackets that are not wrapped, you will chose the one you like most, because you have enough information to chose (meaning 1).
  • When a person chooses (with a reason or will) something, he/she doesn't chose randomly (meaning 1).
  • "Not by chance I went to the swimming pool". It was not by chance, because I was willing to go to the swimming pool (meaning 1)
  • I did not answer randomly to the questions because I had studied a lot (meaning 2)
  • Marco was chosen for the role of Peter Pan, because he was the best (meaning 1)

    • For some people, choices can be not random; while for others they can be random. (for the teacher interrogating pupils, her choice of the pupil to be interrogated is not random, but this choice may appear random to the other pupils)
